Zion National Park, December, 2015
Neither of us had been to Zion before, so we set out to spend a few days there between Christmas and New Year's. We left Missoula Sunday morning and made a beeline for the park, arriving in Springdale just in time to grab a bite to eat before the brewpub closed. Then, it was over to the Watchman campground, where we quickly set up the tent and jumped inside to sleep in and among a giant mess of blankets and sleeping bags. Day 1, we awoke early to hit the Watchman Overlook trail for a nice sunrise vantage of this ridiculous place that we'd yet to see in the daylight. While cold and windy, the views did not disappoint, and by mid-morning, we were back at camp gearing up for the rest of the day. Next up, an ascent of Angel's Landing, one of the must-dos of Zion National Park. Snow and ice made the already vertigo inducing chained trail to the summit a whole lot more interesting, but once again, the views were well worth it. The next day began with a quick trip to Kanab for a shot at a Coyote Buttes permit. Sadly, we didn't win the lottery. Back to Zion and a nice walk in Clear Creek, an easily accessed canyon right off the road in the Upper East Canyon section of the park. The combination of clean snow, luminescent orange rock, and a complete lack of other people made this our favorite hike in the park. Later that afternoon, we walked along the Virgin River, eventually finding a nice spot to enjoy the sunset before returning to camp. On our final morning, we made sure to stop for one last sunrise on our way out of the park, this time from Canyon Overlook. Once again, the cold and wind made their presence felt, but the killer view out toward the main canyon kept us in high spirits for awhile . After an hour or so, we had to call it. A quick half mile out to the car and we were back on the road.
