Little Death Hollow to Wolverine 2017
After a late arrival to the Burr Trail the night before, we set off early Sunday morning for our first hike of this year's spring desert trip: a 20 mile, mostly easy going overnight loop down Little Death Hollow Canyon and back up Wolverine Canyon. The hike into Little Death Holllow begins with a stroll in Circle Cliff Country, but a couple hours of streambed hiking soon lead into a nice, tight, steep walled canyon. As we descended through the Wingate Sandstone Slot, we began to realize that we were actually moving up in stratigraphic layers. The canyon eventually opens up a bit at the contact with the Kayenta formation, and a short time later, we reached the confluence with Horse Creek, where we easily found some nice beach camping. The next morning we took off up Wolverine Canyon (and back down into the Wingate Sandstone). While not as narrow, Wolverine proved to be a very pleasant walk through a beautiful meandering canyon. As we got higher, the walls grew more and more crumbly until it eventually opened up in a land completely littered with petrified wood. From here, a quick overland walk brought us back to the LDH trailhead and Glen the Explorer.
